The indicators in the following list are those rated 5 or higher from Appendix A of the 
Guide to Community Indicators, Second
Edition (note, the SDI Group recommends a ranking of 5 or better if possible in order to provide
a robust measure of livability).
Water Indicators:
- Gallons of water used daily per person
Fish Indicators:
- Fish species with consumption restricted
- Commercial salmon catch in watershed
- Overfished fisheries compared to fisheries not overfished
Groundwater Indicators
- Water level in aquifer wells
- Monitored wells showing groundwater contamination
Land Use Indicators:
- Land use patterns
- Agricultural land loss / total arable land
- Acres under integrated pest management
- Area used for organic agriculture / area used for chemical intensive agriculture
Soil Indicators:
- Area of land affected by soil erosion and salinity
Energy Indicators:
- Total energy consumption
- Electricity consumption from nonrenewables
- Renewable energy use
- Proportion of energy from fossil and non-fossil fuel sources
- Percent of energy supplied from renewable sources within the state
Hazardous Material Indicators:
- Compliance with UST standards for all underground storage tanks
Recycling Indicators:
- Average post-consumer recycled content of city office paper purchases
Air Indicators:
- Number of days air pollutants exceed healthful levels
- Exposure to substandard ambient air quality
- Days per year that air quality standards are met
- Ration of SO2 and smoke levels to EC limits
Biodiversity Indicators:
- Number of species at risk
- Acres of occupied grizzly habitat
- Tailed frog population
- Stream miles opened for migratory fish
Global Indicators:
- Output to sink / capacity of sink to absorb or assimilate
Human Indicators:
Surface Water Quality Indicators:
- Fecal coliform count in surface water
- Miles of rivers not suitable for fishing due to dioxin
- Percentage area of lakes fully suitable for swimming
- Compliance with dissolved oxygen standards
- River compliance with metals water standards
