These examples were compiled from larger lists of communities and regions prepared by Exiting Federal web siteRedefining Progress, Exiting Federal web siteSustainable Measures, and Urban Quality Communications. More detailed descriptions are provided for several of the listed community efforts: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Monica, and Seattle.

  • Alaska

      Sitka: The Island Institute. Developed Indicators of Community Sustainability, A Profile of Community Well-Being which contains information on 32 indicators in the areas of population characteristics, the economy, environmental issues, schools, social and health concerns, and crime.

    Alabama

    • Mobile: Mobile United. Sponsored a visioning process and produced an indicator report for Mobile and Baldwin Counties entitled Progress Indicators for Coastal Alabama: Benchmarks for Envision Mobile-Baldwin, 1998 Edition. Ph. 334-432-1638. A web site is under development.

    • Exiting Federal web siteLos Angeles: Southern California Association of Governments. Reports available on the State of the Region, including a number of different topics.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSanta Barbara: Community Environmental Council. Developed a 1998/1999 report entitled Santa Barbara South Coast Community Indicators Report which describes the results from the Sustainability Indicator Program. This program has 37 indicators divided into three categories: economy & meeting material necessities, environment & use of resources, and community & culture.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSan Diego: Quality of Life Project. This project for the San Diego Region represents a new, participatory approach to public services strategic planning, interagency coordination, and improved access by communities to regional data.

    • Santa Monica: Sustainable City Program. The City of Santa Monica has developed a set of policies and several documents including a list of indicators for measuring the city's progress.Additional information is available.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSan Jose - Silicon Valley: Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network . Released the 2000 annual report measuring progress toward 17 goals for the economy, environment, society and regional stewardship established in Silicon Valley 2010: A Regional Framework for Growing Together.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSan Mateo County Indicators of Sustainability: Tides Center. Provides an annual report card for San Mateo County entitled Indicators For A Sustainable San Mateo County, A Report Card of Our County's Quality of Life. The report analyzes the sustainability of San Mateo County's quality of life through the use of over thirty indicators. Additional information is available.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSilicon Valley: Silicon Valley Environmental Partnership Released a report entitled 1999 Environmental Index, which includes indicators on resource use, population, air and water quality, species and habitat, and hazardous materials.

    • Exiting Federal web siteSan Francisco: Sustainable San Francisco. Developed the 1996 Sustainability Plan for the City and County of San Francisco as a community collaborative effort to set goals for future environmental, economic, and societal well being. This report includes ten topics of environmental concern, five topics of concern spanning many issues, and over 50 indicators to monitor trends in these areas of concern.     Colorado

    • Exiting Federal web siteBoulder County: Boulder County Healthy Communiites Initiative. In Summer 1998, published the Quality of Life in Boulder County 1998 - A Community Indicators Report which contains 34 indicators, including 12 on People, 8 on Environment, 7 on Economy, and 7 on Culture & Society. The environmental portion of the report is available on line.

    • Gunnison County: High Country Citizens' Alliance. Working with Gunnison County to define and measure the County's environmental, social, and economic well being. Plan to publish a report of their findings.

    Connecticut

    • New Haven: On Line Community Data Project. The project's is building a tool that permits agencies and individuals to easily share data pertaining to the improvement of the New Haven community. It is also intended to provide a "community memory" for data.

    District of Columbia

    • Metro Washington: Community Indicators Project: The Project continues to develop a network, as well as a methodological framework, philosophy and bottom-up process for supporting sustainable community development efforts. Ten areas of focus have been identified.

    • Exiting Federal web site Chicago: Chicago Community Trust - Chicago Matters. Chicago Matters is an annual public information series initiated and funded by The Chicago Community Trust, in collaboration with the Chicago Public Library, WTTW Channel 11, WBEZ Chicago’s public radio station 91.5 FM, and The Chicago Reporter. Chicago Matters is designed to enhance public understanding about issues of broad concern. The series partners have provided in-depth programs and reports about such topics as racism, violence, children at risk, immigration, work and health.

    • Western Maine: Sustain Western Maine and Western Mountains Alliance: Commissioned the development of a report with indicators entitled Indicators of Sustainable Development: Franklin County 1998.

    • Kansas City: MRI Research. Overview of Kansas City Vital Signs, a 162 indicator survey of social, health, and economic conditions.

    • Kansas City: Partnership for Children. Develops an annual Report Card/Data Briefing Book with 17 benchmarks for children entitled Report Card on the Status of Children.

    • Exiting Federal web site St. Louis: East-West Gateway Coordinating Council. Developed a1999 Report with indicators entitled: St. Louis - Where We Stand.

    • Exiting Federal web siteGreenville County: County Planning Commission Developing a "Designing Our Destiny Plan" to influence the pattern of growth and preserve the area's quality of life. The process has included compiling data for seven main elements: Population, Cultural Resources, Economics, Natural Resources, Community Facilities, Housing, and Land Use.

    • Exiting Federal web site Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties - Austin: Sustainable Indicators Project: Published second annual report entitled Sustinability Indicators Project of Bastrop, Caldwell, Haysw, Travis, and Williamson Counties, 2001, which includes 39 individual indicators organized in four categories: Our Community/ Our Children, Our Workforce/Our Economy, Our Health/Our Environment, and Our Land/Our Infrastructure.
