The indicators in the following list are those rated 5 or higher from Appendix A of the Exiting Federal web siteThe Guide to Sustainable Community Indicators, Second Edition, by Maureen Hart, 1999.

Availability Indicators:

  • House price to income ratio
  • Number of homeless people
  • Distribution of affordable housing throughout city
  • Homeownership rate
  • Share of new housing units going into incorporated parts of county
  • Waiting time for subsidized housing
  • Annual applicants for affordable housing
  • Single family housing growth compared to population growth
  • Number of people using homeless shelters
Condition Indicators:
  • Floor area per person in housing
  • Low-income housing with severe physical problem
  • Percent of dwellings in need of major repair
  • Housing that is inadequate, overcrowded, or costs over 30% of income
Cost Indicators:
  • Affordability of single family home
  • Renters who cannot afford to live in the city
  • Low-income renters paying more than 30 percent of income on rent
  • Home ownership rate
  • Number of new homes that are energy-efficient
  • Housing affordability ratio - rent prices
  • Median family income as percent of median single family house price
  • Median family income as percent of average rent on two-bedroom apartment
  • Median family income as percent of annual single family house mortgage payment
  • Percent of households able to afford buying median single family house
